Eyecorp - Installation of 103" Plasma into Manchester Airport
Hardware Installed:
Panasonic 103" Plasma Screen, Dell Optiplex GX620, Linksys WRT54G3G, Vodafone 3G Card, Custom Frame for Plasma screen, custom enclosure.
Breakdown:
The Panasonic 103” Plasma weighs around 200kg, so due to the sheer size and weight cannot be lifted like a standard plasma screen, For this install. It was decided that the screen would be portrait to match all of the other advertising screens throughout Manchester Airport, to do this, the screen had to be rotated 90 degrees. To get the screen from the standard landscape storage box, to portrait to connect to the custom frame. A manual crane was required.
The screen was connected to the crane via a system of Chains and ropes, to evenly distribute the weight, once the screen was up high enough, an additional winch was fitted to the left side of the plasma screen, the winch was then used to rotate the plasma screen 90 degrees, and the screen was moved and adjusted to fit into the custom frame.
The custom frame was designed to hold the 103" plasma screen in a portrait format using the existing wall mounts on the back of the screen. It was manufactured in steel, then welded and spray painted to prevent rust and deterioration, the frame was fixed to the floor by 20 bolts, which were held into the concrete by chemical fixings. This was to make sure the screen was steady and completely fixed. The frame also had holes up the right and left to allow the custom exclosure to be fitted.
The enclosure was designed to follow the design of other digital advertising displays installed in the airport, made of wood, it is easy to move and transport, and with a dark laminate exterior was designed to look professional and also stand against the hundreds of passengers that would walk past it every day. The enclosure contained 2 locked doors for easy access to the system inside. It was fixed to the frame, and was an exact size to the screen to give a polished clean, professional look.
The 103" screen is powered by a Dell Optiplex GX620, running adxba Digital Signage application Xces with 3G connectivity to connect to the content server. This enables for the content to be changed remotely and virtually instantly. The screen is also setup to turn off at times that the terminal is not open, preserving the life of the equipment and also conserving power, the screen is maintainted weekly by adxba to ensure reliability and dust protection.
